Mt Athos is NOT autonomous republick but semi-autonomous Greek province.

Ask the monks that question! Some of the monasteries don't even recognize Patriarch Bartholomew!!

I would say that you are technically correct but my diamonitirion is very clear, it says "The Republic of the Monks of Mt. Athos". - so the Greek gov't can call it what it likes but I know how the monks feel about it.

AFAIK it is AFTONOMI KOINOTIS (community) not DIMOKRATIA (democracy).
Patriarch of Konstabdinopolis (Bartolomiew now) is spiritual leader as a compromise from 1912 when the Greek army liberated the area from the Turks and the teritory was lost for his adminstration.
As long as the monks do not embarass the authorities they can be as loudmouthed as they like.
