I'm a bit confused. Why is it assumed that there were no Rectangular / Oblong Scutum employed in Caesar's time? The shield Polybius describes in the Second Century is almost certainly Oblong (Book VI) and his description of the Testudo also implies a Rectangular Scutum (Book XXVIII). Why the change to exclusive use of the Oval in the late republic? Could both types not have been employed? I find it difficult to accept such a large degree of uniformity. Is it just a matter of sculptural evidence?
