Rectangle scutum in Caesarian times
#27
I'm a bit confused. Why is it assumed that there were no Rectangular / Oblong Scutum employed in Caesar's time? The shield Polybius describes in the Second Century is almost certainly Oblong (Book VI) and his description of the Testudo also implies a Rectangular Scutum (Book XXVIII). Why the change to exclusive use of the Oval in the late republic? Could both types not have been employed? I find it difficult to accept such a large degree of uniformity. Is it just a matter of sculptural evidence?

It is a joyful thing indeed to hold intimate converse with a man after one\'s own heart, chatting without reserve about things of interest or the fleeting topics of the world; but such, alas, are few and far between.
