3rd century shield painting / FINISHED

Were 3rd century shield decorations likely to be identical for all shields in a legion or cohort, or was there a base design that individual legionaries modified according to taste, religion, etc?

I think for the shield, that like for every other object, there was no uniformity of items in the Roman Army, only a similarity of functionality. As also the Dura shields might suggest, Roman shields were not as uniform as we might always think. Taste, Religion etc. are quite possible influences.
