i was wondering would anyone agree that the bows used in warfare were
over the 100lb draw weight?
we know turkish bows have been recorded with bow weight in excess of 150#
ive heard storys that for some reason people think horsebows were lighter because they were shot from horses and lots of strange things like that.
i think more than just hitting something with an arrow the objective was to have maximum impact or cause as much blunt force trauma as possible,if penetration didnt happen and im sure anything under 80lb would have been fairly useless against armoured enemy.
although from what i have learned about roman arrows and heads, that maybe they werent fitted on wide shafts they were probably on long shafts and with the speed of a heavy weight bow and the ragidity of reed i think heavy bows would have been used .
i would be interested to here other peoples theories.
but before answering please dont use any modern experiance with horace ford / victorian /modern recurve style shooting, becase it bares no resebelance to how ancient archery warfare was.
as im sure all archers on here already know.
