Gymnasia
#7
Salve,

Weights were used in civilian life, I am just not aware of references in a specifically Roman military context.

For training and exercise of the Roman army with references see:

Davies, R., Service in the Roman army (Edinburgh 1989) 336p.

Vegetius describes physical exercise such as marching, running, jumping and swimming as part of the soldier's training regime.

Latin text of Vegetius, Epitoma 1

Milner, N.P., Vegetius: epitome of military science (Liverpool 1993) 152p.

Greek Vase illustrating jumping with weights

Regards,
