Hi Brutus
I make flexible textile with traditional glues frecuently as a base for my paintings. This image will show how flexible can be, even with a thick layer of canvas:

Artist working on funerary portraits of a centurion´s family, will be not too prone of puting unexisting sleeves on a muscle cuirass if they expect to be paid for they work.
I´m not triying to convince anyone. I just point that "traditional" explanations have many flaws.
I´m providing more references, than the ones you will be able to provide for a probable anachronistic Roman bronze cuirass you are wearing...besides Hollywood films
