Update on the Spatha and Gladius fighting techniques!
#77
I'm far from an expert on the timeframe, but many of the pics of reenactors of the late 4th cent. I've seen show many large oval shields, though not curved the way they were in the Republic or Principate period, but definitely shoulder to shin size and wider than shoulder to shoulder, which is wider than an older scutum. I'm going to have to try out some moves in the garage tomorrow and see how well this whole right left forward thing could work. I wonder if the Gauls with their smaller/thinner/flat thureos shields and large slashing swords had a similar stance. I've never been comfortable with the idea that they fought in a braced shield position.

Also, I agree, a strong defense and protecting yourself are cornerstones of fighting. Though being braced isn't always necessary. I think learning to use the scutum means accepting that its will tilt sometimes and embracing it.
