Yes his point (as I understand it) is that an edge strike will not work because of the curve... (he say so in the vid) and with a horizontal grib striking with the sides of the shield would not make much sense anyway.
But using the bottom edge of the shield should work just fine.
On of his points (again when talking viking age shields) is that the main fighting is done with the shield. You use the shield to great the opening and then exploit with the sword. And that Idea do make sense when we talk about the legionary gear.
