I highly respect Roland and his work on the I.33. Search Dimicator on Facebook if you are interested in his recent work. If I remember correctly he wrote that these techniques would not work with a domed shield as well as shown here.
Concerning Iconography you have to be careful to interpret the circumstances of a scene.
There are a lot of raised shield poses in Gladiator Iconography, most of which are a gesture of victory outside of a combat situation.
