I can't resist the temptation to post here again.
I think HRR had the right idea, but his system is very outdated in the light of the current state of knowledge. His decisions in criteria for deliniting the types is at times arbitrary or plain wrong.
The imperial Italic is not a separate group in my opinion. They are just a continuation of the imperial gallic. So are most of the 3rd century auxiliary cavalry types. His decision to make the eyebrows a defining characteristic of the IG is plain wrong, though perhaps understandable as he did not know of the imperial gallic ones with cross guards added.
