Actually, there is a history of historical criticism of game design. It's usually amateur/hobbyist criticism, rather than professional criticism, but didn't Jim Dunnigan get his start with a paper on the Battle of the Bulge and a critique of the Avalon Hill game on the battle?

Also, the original article uses detail as evidence of accuracy. But it isn't. It's important to get the underlying model right, and adding detail before fixing the underlying model can disguise problems with the underlying model, and I think that's why Phillip Sabin tried to minimize detail in Lost Battles.
