I got into trouble on the Armour Archive for calling the three or four layers of heavy cloth which form the foundation of Japanese arm harness "padding" (plates of wood or iron or sections of maille were stitched on top of the cloth) So this is an area where a lot of semantic confusion is possible.
We have pretty good evidence that in the middle of the 15th century, many people wore a doublet under their armour. Two heavy layers of cloth, and possibly one light one if they "had a shirt upon them."
