Did hastati wear anything like a subarmalis?

Yes padding is a must. Nobody is disputing that. My point is that it doesn't have to be an inch thick. A few layers of cloth, even under mail, is pefectly serviceable. We have surviving examples of arming garments and texts telling us how to make them. None of them are as thick as people seem to think.
