I can't say I'm entirely convinced that mail had a fixed lining, but I appreciate the experimental evidence. How much did the lining affect the bulk of the armour when crumpled up? Could it still be cleaned in the manner suggested by some, i.e. placing it in a barrel with sand and rolling it to remove rust?
