Hi Graham,

my English is not good. I hope you understand what I mean.
It's important that the reader of the book acknowledges that the antique was colored and not white. That's the main point. This gives the ancient art a completely new appearance.
In my book, I say very clearly that the colors are not original, and represent only a try as it might have looked like.
All colors in the book are based on wall paintings, traces of paint on sculptures and mosaics.
Tunics for the simple soldier, I used different colors because we do not know exactly what colors were used.
I don´t used white and red, because many literary references that assign colors to other persons or circumstances (ceremonies, Pompa or sacrifices).
In my opinion these colors were not used in the normal service.
In late antiquity, it was different. Since there are mosaics, where soldiers carry red and white tunics.
So, I hope that you understand what I'm saying.
How nice it must have looked like before when everything was painted.
The painting of the Trajan column is an attempt to revive the polychromy. And that's what I wrote in my book.
