What Weapons?
#21
I just went and looked at the Amazon listing for The Camp of the Saints' and found both the synopsis and the reviews fairly alarming.

"The title comes from Revelation, Chapter 20, and refers to the forces of evil laying seige to the camp of the saints, here meant to be the nations of the West."

Yep, we'd better keep those 'forces of evil' out of our camp, especially if they are carrying 'brown and black babies' in their arms.

"Raspail has the Vatican, World Council of Churches, and other organs of what he saw as Western liberal compassion try to feed the Armada, as it sails around the Cape. The bodies of their would-be benefactors are cast into the sea."

And 'bleeding hearts' who meet the 'human deluge' with compassion will be answered by violence by these savages, of course. But what do you expect when you have "Brazilian pope".

Another reviewer babbles of the book's "fictional prophesy of the End Times" ('Tha Bible is on ah side!') and "the death of the White race" while another rants about "anti PC religions like Leveyian Satanism, Temple of Set, Odinism/Asatru etc... and the decline of Christianity in the West".

One semi-informed reviewer rants about "the thousands of Afghani immigrants stopped off the coast of Australia', which sounds highly alarming and quite relevant. Pity the facts are that these 'thousands' were actually about 300 and the majority these so-called 'immigrants' have since been judged, even by the strigent and restrictive standards of the current Australian Government, to be legitimate political refugees.

Another reviewer sagely observes:

"(I)t lends great credence to the Australian government's decision to impose limits on the rate of change of their national composition."

In fact, it's since emerged that the Australian Government, facing an upcoming federal election, blatantly lied to the Australian public, claiming the refugees tried to throw their children into the sea and saying these were not the kinds of actions of 'the kind of people we want living here'. This claim was nonsense, and the Government knew it at the time, but they peddled it to the media and did everything they could to cover up the deception, in a concerted effort to win votes (and it worked - they were re-elected on the basis of their 'tough border protection' policies). The Australian Defence Department has since rebelled against the Government's policy of deception and dehumanisation, leaking memos ordering them to avoid taking photos which might 'humanise the asylum seekers' and even revealing that the Government sat on reports of a refugee vessel in trouble off Indonesia, with Australian Navy rescue ships only a few hours away, allowing it to sink with the loss of several hundred lives.

If this book lends creedence to this kind of cynical and racist manipulation of people's ignorance and zenophobic fears then its more evidence of a rising tide of insularity, selfishness and ignorance in the West - something which is far more scary to me than any fictional 'human deluge'.

Apparently Raspail was inspired by Erlich's 1970s 'classic' The Population Bomb. And look how much of that 'prophecy' turned out to the true.

I can think of about a million books I'd rather read.
