I'll second all of that. My first weekend of reenactment could not have been more fun or more friendly. Particular highlights included throwing axes (definitely getting one of them), British Bulldog with shield walls (not strictly reenactment but a good game to play afterwards) and horseback archery with real live targets (shieldwall: the legionaries had been warned to keep their feet in, so I feel no guilt at all about a blunt shot into a protruding foot...).
And, as John said, the evenings were pretty epic. My wife expected me to come home aching (and was she right!) but I think the soot took her by surprise!
