Many Roman men prior to the 1st century B.C. had full beards, and indeed we have some busts to suggest this. In the empire, we see a smaller, chin-strap beard in some of the imperial sculpture. Yet it had always been my understanding that the fashion in the 1st century B.C. was not to wear a beard. If any of you bearded gentlemen portray soldiers from that period what do you do? Do you shave before a re-enactment or not? I have a beard, but am not all that keen on shaving every time I do a re-enactment. Thoughts?
Thanks!
