This is an excellent thread as I'm interesting in recreating a Severan legionary portrayal myself. I am a collector of Severan dynasty coinage and I occasionally enjoy doing presentations for classes and other audiences on the subject, and I thought it might be cool to combine that with a presentation of what life was like for a soldier in the army of Septimius Severus (or his son Caracalla). So far this thread has been very informative. Maybe someone can help me with a question I have regarding the Lorica Hamata in this period. Would it be correct to assume that mail armor being used was still an alternating flat ring/round ring pattern, and if so where can one purchase a Lorica Hamata of this style without the shoulder doubling?
It seems that if you want to buy the armor for this particular period you have to plunk down a lot of cash for early Roman mail which you are basically going to throw 1/4 of away. Would it be reasonably accurate and perhaps more cost effective to simply buy a riveted chainmail hauberk designed for another period of reenacting, for Saxons or Vikings and the like?
Thanks,
Dave
