Thank you Nathan!
You described my dilemma perfectly...when I'm reading Latin names, I am unsure somtimes of how c's and t's should be pronounced, and where to put the stresses on the syllables. From what I've researched so far, I think you are correct in your explanation. I'm thinking of taking a Latin class in order to get a handle on this. If anyone could recommend a good online basic Latin class, I would appreciate it. I know there are a lot of online options out there but I always like getting recommendations if possible!
I've always wondered about the pronunciation of Diocletian too. One of my social studies teachers pronounced it Dio-kleeshan, but I was never sure if that is the English-ized pronunciation, or what.
I hope to be able to one day read Latin names properly, instead of skipping over them or making up my own pronunciation in my head. And I've always wondered, in ancient Rome, how normal conversation really sounded, and how names were really pronounced. So many questions!
Any help or thoughts from anyone is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
