I've never studied Latin myself either, but I believe that c's and t's should be pronounced 'hard', and stress should fall on the second syllable. This may well be a false impression, but if so your examples should be:
Alcimus - Al-KI-mus
Domitius - Do-MI-ti-us (four syllables)
Licinius - Li-KI-ni-us (four syllables again). I tend to think of the first syllable as 'Ly' rather than 'Lee', but that could well be wrong...
I have a bit of a problem with the name Diocletian, actually - by these standards it should be Dio-Kle-ti-an, but the man's name was originally Diocles, which would seem to suggest Dio-Klee-shun. I don't know if anyone could clear this up...
On the same subject, there are a number of Roman and other words and names I find tricky. Can anyone suggest a pronunciation for these?
Ctesiphon - capital of the Parthian and Persian empires, but what about that first double consonant?!
Moesia - mee-sia? mice-ya? moo-yes-ya?
Maeatae - Severus' formidable British enemies, but way too many vowels... myat-ee? mighty-eye? meaty-eye?
Any help with the above, or suggestions for other 'difficult words' perhaps, much appreciated...
