August 26, 1071AD: At the disastrous Battle of Manzikert (originally Manavazkert, now Malazgirt), the army of the Seljuk Turks under Alp Arslan defeat the Roman Army and take the emperor Romanus IV Diogenes prisoner. Civil war in the Roman empire subsequently caused Anatolia to be lost to the Turks, and it was never recovered. Loss of this territory meant the slow but definite decline of the Roman empire.
