I would have thought that if any pigment had survived anywhere, it would be on the casts in the V & A, as these were made before the age of modern pollution which must surely have compromised, if not destroyed, anything which remained of the paint on the column itself. If anything still survived when the casts were made, then it might be reasonable to suppose that some of it might have been taken off with the impression material and could have been deposited on the casts, much in the same way that some of the Elephant Man's hair ended up on the cast of his head. Just a thought, which I am sure has been proposed many times before.
