I would strongly recommend the two books by H.H. Scullard:<br>

A History Of The Roman World From 753 to 146 B.C.<br>
<br>
From The Gracchi To Nero: A History Of Rome From 133 B.C. To A.D. 68<br>
<br>
They are still the standard if you are serious about history, but, they are not picture books.<br>
