I wouldn't compare him on those lines either, Robert.
The warfare in those days was brutal and close up, and both sides showed little mercy.
It's easy to point to that 1 fact, but it was a war of survival, even if it was instigated for the the expansion of Roman and ~Caesars prestige.
He didn't exterminate all the Gauls as a planned program of eradication, but was fighting against the opposition.
