He is either a has been or a never were. If he was a good scientist before, I guess he has forgone his responsibility to the subject in exchange for air time (money, fame, etc). I guess that if given the choice to make a boat load of money vs just digging around and finding things, I think that most people would go with the former. I know of a scientist who claimed himself an organic chemist even though by training he was a biochemist. He would hire all orgo chemists to do the work then ask them the ins and outs of a research project he was going to present at a conference and just repeat everything off a paper.
