I bought both books recently and would rate them both quite highly. I also have Robin Birley's 'Vindolanda: A Roman Frontier Outpost on Hadrian's Wall' which, although now very out of date owing to the number of discoveries at Vindolanda since it was published, is still a good read. I suspect that it has long been out of print however, being only two years younger than 'The Armour of Imperial Rome' by a certain H.R. Robinson.<br>
