Before you read Ann's Ars Tactica treatise, you should get her first book on the topic of Roman horsemanship, called <em>EQUUS: the Horse in the Roman World</em>.<br>

I have both, and of the two, I prefer <em>Equus</em> as the better introduction. Warning: it'll make you want a horse so you can re-enact cavalry. (Or fall off trying!)<br>
