I have to have those lovely Hoplite mercenaries when playing as the Romans. The Cretan Archers are awesome for range. I plant a fort in the area (with a young up and coming general) so I can recruit these units and constantly replenish the numbers. 2 units of mercenary hoplites, 2 units of mercenary peltasts and 1 unit of Cretan archers makes my ranger force as they all wear green. I also use them to hold bridges.
