Good Idea Christian. I'm up for doing a section. (First & Second Century is my forté!)
So, we need to confirm the attribute categories and all agree. I like this set..
(1) Bowl material?: CuSn, CuZn, Fe or U
(2) Shape of bowl? B (bulbous), C (conical), H (hemispherical), S (segmented), U (unknown, if damaged)
(3) Tinning? F (full) P (Partial) N (None)
(4) Is the bowl decorated in any way? Y, N, U
(5) Does the skull have eyebrows? Y, N, U
(6) Enamelled rivets? Y, N, U
(7) Neck guard (i.e. is there one?): Y, N, U
(8) Neck guard orientation: H (horizontal), S (sloped), N (none)
(9) Brow guard: Y, N, U
(10) Brow guard orientation: H, S, N, U
(11) Crest knob: Y, N
(12) Crest knob decoration? Y, N, U
(13) Ear protection? Y, N
(14) Ear protection integral or applied? I, A
(15) Ear guard material? CuSn, CuZn, FE or U
(16) Cheek guard(s) present?: Y, N
(17) Cheek guard plain/decorated/embossed (P/D/E)
(18) Cheek guards material? CuSn, CuZn, FE or U
(19) Face mask? Y, N
(20) Face mask material? CuSn, CuZn, FE or U
(21) Face mask decorated? Y, N, U
For things like missing brow guards, it is sometimes possible to see where it was positioned, so even if it is no longer present, the orientation of the browguard can be surmised.
Likewise for neck guards - some examples have been heavily reconstructed. Some have even been removed in antiquity (a helmet from Krefeld) It won't be as easy as we may think!!
