We use a water based wood stain.
I tried a test piece using thin washes of latex house paint. The wood stain is superior!
The brand probably does not matter.
We use hand pump sprayers (2 gallon size) because I don't have a power sprayer. Though power sprayer will push the stain deeper into the fabric and would be faster.
We stain on a flat surface. Less run-off with a manual spayer
We have three old tents of heavy regular cotton duck canvas... stained, dirty, some mildew stains, some food stains, some mud, some soot.. applied the stain without cleaning the tents! No problem!
