Pitch works much better indeed. You can adapt the ingredients of the pitch to the kind of work you are doing.
But for small projects like beltplates it's a bit of a hassle. You have to heat the pitch, put in the plate, heat the pitch again, take out the plate, clean of the pitch (this can be very difficult at times)...
