I understand that the modern salute derives from the middle-ages, BUT that there is evidence for the military salute going back as far as the stone age? This seems to me very hard to believe. How would one, starting with pictorial evidence, proove that there was a continuity in use of this salute, to start with? How would one be able to proove that ALL these sources show really a military salute? Even if the b&w sketch above shows a military salute, how would one argue that there is a continuity from then on to the Romans, that the cultures in between (temporal and regional) also used this salute?
This is methodologically questionable. One cannot assume the existence of a military salute and then start searching for evidence. It is basically impossible, regarding the amount of pictorial evidence, NOT to find pictures that seem to display what one is looking for.
