Hi John,
excuse the question if it sounds silly, but why do you want to send it overseas for this test. Just carry the parcel a while around and treat it a bit roughly just where you live. Won't the result be the same? :?
As to shipping painted fabric: maybe there's is some kind of chemical that makes certain paint temporarily bit more flexible without really dissolving the paint. :? Maybe a professional housepainter could give some hints. Or the people who make scenery-paintings for the stage. These giant paintings they sometimes make are quite flexible, but I dunno which paint they use.

Quote:A paint by numbers could be another worthwhile look at the problem. Get the outline of the design painted onto the fabric, then when it arrives you fix it to the shields and then paint the colours in yourself. When making my scutum I made myself some templates according to the Cancelleria-relief. I "calculated" and partially eyeballed some points on the fabric where to put the templates and I think the result is quite reasonable for a first attempt (... little variations should actually be realistic). All you need would be a file with the templates data to be printed out. No shipping cost at all.
