Bear in mind that something must absorb the shooting shock. If no part of the arms strike the frame, then it will be the bowstring the one absorbing the impact and it will tear apart after a few shots.
In my opinion, the arms' heels MUST strike the centre/inner stanchions, while clearing the outer ones. That's why Ancient artillerymen padded the centre/inner stanchions. The heel is the strongest part of the arm and the centre stanchions, the strongest part of the frame.
