The bolt length may be to long there is an optimum length for each machine, we made bolts of different lengths to see how they work.At the moment I dont have our size at hand but if they are too long or short you do not get the same preformance. I know of machines made like this that the bolt has hit the inner frame, with the bolt flying around the artillary crew 
It might be worth making the bolts various lengths because the fireing range will have a vast difference in range and power.
