I'm not sure we know, but this is a key point. Symmetrical may have been used to mean:
a) not cresent shaped- thus symmetrical on 2 axis and oval.
b) not oval shaped- Round, symmetrical on a given plane.
Someone would have to read him and see if he used the word elsewhere and the context, if he described other peltae and what word he used, if he described anything else that is oval as "symmetrical", and if he used a term for round commonly when writing of the aspis.
