Today in a scentific book you wouldn't say "symetrical" to mean a circle,neither oval.Although circle is indeed the only symetrical shape from any possible dimention.It has the exact same meaning as in English. Cymetrical could be any possible outline, Even the crescent is symetrical in one dimention.
But I don't know if it had different meanings in ancient language.
