Pteryges with Hamata

My first atempt at making a subarmalis with linen pteryges:


The hamata is from Find It Armory, with 6mm ID rings, and has been slightly modified by the replacement of the hamata hooks with a pair purchased from Raymond's Quiet Press, the hooks that came with the shirt were quite oversize, and I removed the leather around the neck opening. With the leather around the neck I found it nearly impossible to get my large head through. Over all I'm very satisfied with the shirt, there were only a few bad rings. I fabricated a few replacements and some rings I could simply re-rivet.

For the subarmalis I attempted to follow the examples illustrated by the Adamclisi Metopes, short pteryges around the upper thighs and arms. I used linen sewn around felt. I'm not quite satisfied with the pteryges around the arms. I haven't figured out how to achieve the nice uniform look illustrated on the metopes. The choice of the red on blue color scheme follows the color scheme recently discovered on the statue of Augustus.

One issue that I have with the hamata is how to get it clean? Every time I put it on I need to wash my hands afterwards. It came without galvanization.
