One reason I'm loving it so much is apparently the author of the book, Elizabeth Gaskell, was a fervent 19th-C progressive, which isn't forced down your throat but insinuates itself subtly through the series. These are pretty much real people in a real town (based on Knutsford in Cheshire), as the book is more like a series of episodes that illustrated the changes of the mid-19th-C that England was going through. The TV version also adds elements from her other books, which isn't a bad thing I think.
