Sometimes there is a point. If you anneal brass and then put it through a rolling mill without cleaning the oxidation (either mechanicaly or by pickling) the oxidation will be rolled into the surface and it will not be possible anymore to remove it by pickling...

I know that their is no certainty about the use of a rolling mill by the Romans, but this is irrelevant to the point I want to make :wink:
