Hello Kate,
Are you the same Kate who wrote the preface to C. M Gilliver's The Roman Art of War?
Just a query on the training of recruits? Would it not have been the responsibility of some local official, who may have been in the Legions before becoming a big-wig in what ever town he was retired to, to ensure the local men sent to the Legion's were of suitable quality, and capable of fighting at least at a basic level before being sent off to god knows where?
It would seem a sensible duty to assign a former Primus Pilus or whaterver, if he held some position of authority in the colony or town he retired to?
Just a thought.
