Similar things have happened in various wars, two I know about were the American Civil War, where the North traded coffee for tobacco with some soldiers from the South, and spent a night drinking and chewing during a long battle. I've heard of two stories of that sort from Europe in WW2.
When the lull happens, if the people can converse, the soldiers will almost always agree that there wouldn't be a war if they had it their way, but they do keep their duty and obligation once the battle starts. Strange thing, war.
