Robert and Byron.
The felter I am working with uses either hand or machine to make the felt . She obtains the wool and then felts it. Depending on the size of the job, she may use hand or machine. However, she is trying to use her machine more than manual labor.
The machine she has is specifically designed to produce felt that is like hand made felt. This felt place is not a huge commercial felter where only one type of felt is produced. Here the felt can be made of any thickness, denisty, or color (natural or dyed).
This felter has aslo made under armor before and was telling me of the advantages of felt as a material.
Byron most of what you find is synthetic or 1/4 inch thick (if natural). I know this because I ran into the same problem. So I looked up fiber processing on google and came up with a list of different fiber processors that can do this custom work.
The one I am using is Pufpaff's Fiber Processing here in the US.
Robert I am not sure I understand the first part of your question "what use is there for this 'ancient' sort of 'loose' felt?
