Horse shoes? Tied on not nailed?
#61
Admittedly a bit disparate references of unequal quality, but here we go:

Take for example the above Ruprechtsberger p. 28:

From what I read - in a summary elsewhere - two examples of the large horseshoe find on the Saalburg were excavated from below a 2nd-3rd century AD wall: L. J a c o b i , Das Römerkastell Saalburg, Homburg vor der Höhe 1897 S. 522 ff.

H.-E. M a n d e r a , Sind die Hufeisen von der Saalburg römisch? Saalbg. Jb. XV, 1956, S. 29 ff. defends Jacobi's datings.

Check out http://www.diss.fu-berlin.de/diss/servl ... 000003856/ p. 10ff. ( 05_litue.pdf ) for a discussion which may be helpful.

Also the Waldmössingen find (Ulfwin » Tue 11 Nov 2008, 11:59 above) may be well worth to be followed up.

This guy seems to be pretty convinced of their existence: http://www.heimatforschung-eifel.de/ver ... feisen.htm (see Datensammlung below)

Stefan (Literary references to the discussed topics are always appreciated.)
