How to hold the scutum?

I just got a deepeeka scutum and when I hold it the top part of the handle hole digs into my left hand slightly below the wrist. Since the handle is part of the reinforcement (i.e. set into the shield instead of behind it) how should I grip it to avoid the shield from biting into my hand?
