Very clever and useful. It's not hard to convert Euros to other modern currency, so it's easy to get a "dollar" value. Thanks for the work spent on fixing that up!

Quote:... if you could point to a website with exact measures of the ancient Greek time, I will review the software and MIGHT include the ancient Greek measures, as well. Not sure, though.
Greek measures are surprisingly straightforward, once you realise (a) that everything depends on the pous ('foot'), and (b) that there were basically four different 'foot' standards.

(a) 1 pous = 16 daktyloi, and all other measures derive from this.
e.g., the palastê ('palm') of 4 daktyloi; the spithamê ('span') of 12 daktyloi; the pêchys ('cubit') of 24 daktyloi.

(b) the Attic foot = 295.7mm; the Olympic foot = 320mm; the Pergamene foot = 330mm; the Aeginetan foot = 333mm.

Would the program work just as well as a spreadsheet? Depending on how Google Documents and Spreadsheets works, it might even be possible to place a spreadsheet version online. I thought about doing a spreadsheet for some of the units on http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/units that I use most often, but so far haven't bothered.

(This isn't meant to dismiss your efforts at all. Instead it's meant to suggest an alternate way to do the same job, possibly with less effort.)

Hmm, not sure what a spreadsheet exactly means. I am not English, sorry. Can you explain a bit more? Thanks,

Sven

A spreadsheet is a program that allows storing data and formula in tables of rows and columns. Some examples include Microsoft Excel, Lotus 123, Quattro Pro, and Google Spreadsheets. (The term came from the practice of using large sheets of paper marked with grids, for financial calculations, but that meaning is mostly obsolete now.)

For example, to calculate Roman lengh units, you could create a spreadsheet with these formula (dividing columns with the | character):

Row A: 'Input | 'Unit | 'Mille | 'Passus | 'Gradus | 'Pes | 'Uncia
Row B: (empty) | 'Mille | =B1 | =B1*1000 | =B1*2000 | =B1*5000 | =B1/60000
Row C: (empty) | 'Passus | =C1/1000 | =C1 | =C1*2 | =C1*5 | =C1*60
Row D: (empty) | 'Gradus | =D1/2000 | =D1/2 | =D1 | =D1*2.5 | =C1*30
Row E: (empty) | 'Pes | =E1/5000 | =E1/5 | =E1/2.5 | =E1 | =E1*12
Row F: (empty) | 'Uncia| =F1/60000 | =F1/60 | =F1/30 | =F1/12 | =E1

Someone using such a spreadsheet could fill in an empty spaces, and the spreadsheet program would display the calculated values in the other cells of the same row. For example, if I filled in the empty space in row E with the value 50, the spreadsheet program would automatically calculate the values 0.01, 10, 20, 50, 500 for the other columns (ignoring the second column, which would remain "Pes"). If I changed the number to something else, the spreadsheet program would automatically recalculate the new values for the other formula spaces.

(Forgive me if I have messed up the units. I found a site that says there are 1000 Passus per Mille, 2 Gradus or 5 Pes per Passus, and 12 Uncia per Pes. I know I'm using only the singular words for the units, and that I should be using plurals.)

To put it online, one could build it as a web form. For example, this page includes a few Roman units, along with the clutter of endless modern units:

It would be easy to establish an online versdion with PHP and MySQL. But I don't know if Jasper wants that, up to him. But I am happy that many persons use my little software, instead. Makes me feeling good!

Have a nice Xmas time, alltogether,

Sven

I understand now what a spreadsheet program is. But I am not sure if I do it that way. It would require to have a much biiger size to enable a better overview on the varous cellls besides and below each other.

I still keep your suggestion for a later time. Might be, I will come back to it. :-) )

Greetings,

Sven

My offer is still there for Jasper, to help developing online functions for an all-to-all ancient measures converter. I will, for sure, do this at my own ancient naval forum!

Meanwhile, feel free to download the Ancient measure Converter free of any cost - this little cosy cute tool will help you a lot to get a much better understanding of ancient measures and sizes!
