OK folks, with the leaves falling and the last events almost done (I still have a school visit scheduled next monday..), here's some ideas which are mentioned before, but in need of being picked up again.

1) We want a marching song

2) We want several Late Roman commands that we all agree on, at least for the event itself.

3) I really want to receive ideas (PM or mail me) for extra (smaller) show elements.

How about taking a video of the battle (perhaps with a short script (an usurpation  ))

Good idea!

we have the legal imperial court (the Galla Placidia and Valentinian III court for the legal imperial power...) we must have an usurpator and his forces. maybe a donnativum and adlocutio troops seem to procopius. The rest of the military units defend the young emperor and his short comitatus...

If there was room for a night "show" at the Archeon event, you know: roman dance, roman music, roman food banquets, etc., what about the sudden and dramatic call for Iulianus Augustus by acclamation in that night of February 360, during the soldiers revolt at Parisii (Ammianus Marcellinus XX-4,12-18 )?

a) In the night, during dances, musics and banquet for the public, when suddenly, groups of menacing, angry and excited soldiers storm with flaming torches into the castle/palace central court, where shouting strongly, acclaim "Iuliane Auguste"! "Iuliane uiuas!" ...

b) Firstly Iulianus, in a short and dramatic adlocutio, refuses, asking the soldiers to obey to the Costantius' call for his army, but finally he accepts as augustus: we have the full latin text from Ammianus!

c) Iulianus is so acclaimed and lifted on a round shield of the Petulantes and as Augustus is crowned with the gold torques (lacking there a real diadem) of Maurus, uexillifer of the Petulantes.

A moment full of atmosphere: the public will surely enjoy a lot and will be happy of learnig an episode of the history of Europe (a quick speaker is maybe needed to explain in few words).

WoW! 8)

Well, we did this last time. It was my original intention to organise a running battle between a usurper and a force defending the royal family. We decided against this over safety measures because we felt we had to separate fighters from untrained fighters.

The idea might work when no actual or extremely choreographed fighting is involved. But then, we already did something a bit similar.

Also remember that the wall and gate will be ready next year, which gives us more opportunities to consider...

Well, no night show, everything between 12 and 17 I'm afraid.

We could do something like that, but we would a) have to make sure it's already written in the program and/or b) make sure it's being explained fast and clear enough at the moment of the event. Otherwise, why not?
