Nope, I did read it (years ago), but no Arab ladies come to mind. Maybe the shoot a scene in Constantinople and dream up a harim for the Eastern Emperor?

Ah, I recall.. But Vortigern in the book was a very old geezer - this must be the German who replaced him!

I like this Vortigern best:

The movie is called Merlin, in fact a miniseries from 1998.

The crap some people write.. Read this viewers' comment:
Quote:The historical character in question was an interesting guy. First, he was the leader of the Angles and the Romans' ally. Vortigern was given the title of Dux Bellorum - 'war leader' - which made him equal to the general of Praetorians in rank. And more than that, he managed to marry the patrician daughter who was distantly related to the Caesar August. To make it more clear it was like if Chelsea Clinton would marry some African prince. Vortigern had to have got a great charisma to charm the humored Roman girl, to my guess. (or either she had to be partial to barbarians and tired of poshy young men she used to see around) But they didn't live happily hereafter for long. She died and a poisoning was suspected. You see, Vortigern badly needed the alliance with the tribes of the Picktes, who otherwise would have flooded his lands. In a month after his marriage he was betrayed by the new relatives during the negotiations and slaught sleeping in the Stonehedge as well as most of his people were. It was called the Long Knives Night.
OMG... Confusedhock:

More about 'Merlin' the series:

There's been a 'sequel' released this year, 'Merlin's Apprentice':

Hi Robert

In that 'Merlin' movie/series did you also spot some helmets which were survivors from 'The Fall of the Roman Empire'!

Yes I saw the sequel recently. Well to be honest only half an hour, as you say it was really bad. In fact 'King Arthur' was a lot better!

Hi Caius here To say that this movie is disappointng is polite. The recent King Arthur movie despite the mistakes it made was far better. At least the Roman troops at the wall (the Auxillary garrison) had Late Roman type sheild devices (Chi-rio). While they did kinda look like 2nd century troops at least they looked Roman  . Looks like someone was rumanging through an old wardrobe set looking for whatever was there. Too bad oh well cheers Caius Thomas R

Another great cast has fallen victim to crappy plots. It's just not fair.

*sigh*

And does anyone else think that Ben Kingsley (the old dude with long hair) looks like Qui-Gon Jinn from The Phantom Menace?

You honestly made it through the entire volume? It must have been infinitely finer than that production appears to be. Just looking at the publicity shots creeped me out...

Now, that doesn't mean I won't watch someday... and that's my own "bold admission..." but to do so I will definitely need to be desperate for a Roman (well, in this case a pseudo-Roman) "fix."

I guess I must be crazy but I didn't think the book was that bad... If you read it the same way as you would read an adventure/fantasy story it isn't that bad. There are a lot of scenes in the book that are very movielike. It is true that the book seems to be a moviescript.

I can already imagine the massacre of the outnumbered legion. The flashbacks of a buring city by night. The mounted chases. The snowboarding down snow covered slopes on shields. The singing of melancolic songs while they travel by barge on the river Big Grin

Like I said, very much fantasy atmoshpere. istorical the film will be worse than crap but it might be a very enjoyable film. Oh and I think Stephen Mckid isn't a bad actor...
