Should RomanArmy.com have an Equipment Section?
#16
When I was over there in March, we talked about this, and he gave me his photos, with permission to use them, as long as they were credited. I posted them at yahoogroups, with a bunch of other stuff on Romans and Museums. I am not sure if it would be worthwhile to link to that from here, or even if I could! We'll see here and now if I can make a workable link.
I think a good equipment section would be particularly valuable what with, among other things, the continual and ongoing SCA vs reenactor arguments. One site that reenactors could point to set a minimum example might really help folks keep the two separate, not just in appearance but in approach.
I took a lot of photos for Matt yesterday at our fabricum of the interior of lorica to show where the straps are riveted, and photos of the best looking baltei, the proper lacing of caligae (he just could not figure why people can't lace their own shoes) and some helmets with crests. You'll have to check the Legio XX site later next week when he gets time to post these.
Richard
A new Equipment section is now in place in the Sitemap of RomanArmy.com. Its exact shape remains to be seen. I certainly would like to find an Editor for the section so it will grow... Send email inquiries to [email protected] .
I really like the proposal for an equipment section.
A glossary approach is a nice and practical one: anyone clicking on an item will then find info. But I also like an historical organisation (i.e. by eras) where the equipment of an era is described. Once an era is consciously chosen, the person looks for the info he wishes. Some might say that the difference with a straight forward glossary approach is small and useless. Instead I think the tendency for specialisation has gone so far that many of us suffer from an acute loss of curiosity for what happened earlier or later than their pet period, be it that of the second Punic War, of Ceasar or Trajan's period. My hope is that a self-conscious person might admit that he/she knows little of another era. But besides the frequent readers of this forum and other roman army fanatics, we think also of the novice. This person would, in the historical approach, immediately see the various options to click on (the different eras) and learn, then and there, that the romans were around for a long time and they didn't always wear lorica segmentata and tunics.
To stimulate a taste for wider pictures, and because I think it is the most useful to UNDERSTAND, I propose an historic approach.

Jen, the equipment section has impressive suppliers, but all in Europe. Do you happen to know if any of them have a problem shipping to the US? Since they all seem to have snail mail, finding out could take a while.
Aulus, Legio XX

The ones that I know do NOT ship are so indicated in their listing; otherwise, should be no problems.
You know what would be nice also? While this would be an expediant place to use as a reference of historical photos of equipment, and drawings (such as some of Connolly's), pictures and photographs of re-constructions would be nice as well. It would be an excellent reference for people attempting to make similar items. Diagrams detailing "how to" make or build kit would also be extremely useful. Having pictures of your own projects is an excellent way to get some constructive criticism, and share ideas.
I'm all for it! As a long time enthusiast and budding reenactor, I'm always looking for good photos/ descriptions of stuff. Ain't many museums in Colorado that have displays of Roman era artifacts!

Jasper et al., I know there is a lot on the go right now, but what is the situation with the equipment section? If you give me some heads up, I can start making some really good diagrams and such, so when and if you are ready, there will be no dely with sending you said images.

AFAIK the equipment section is still very much in, let's say, design stage . One of the things we're considering - and that goes for the whole site - is the copyright issue. We'd love to show anything and everything illustrating the Roman army, but in fact we can only display the stuff we photographed or drawn ourselves or have been given by others. So by all means, start making diagrams, reconstructional illustrations and pics! They'll be fully credited of course and will get a nice spot on the site (right over the fireplace )
Greets
It remains on the back burner while we pursue other projects, such as the Imagebase of military gravestones, and establishing a new academic journal, and um, working for a living, I suppose. At least that's my excuse!
Storage is not the problem at RA.com. It's more that at the moment the webteam is rather small (in effect, it's just me). Want an equipment section? We'll need someone to build the pages, and plenty of text and material!
Greets
